Dear friend,
“Mom, Please…? All my friends are going!”
Mark barely threw his knapsack off, when he ran to ask his mother about camp. At school, everyone was talking about their plans for the summer. Mark was sure he’d be returning to Camp Gan Israel. He loved the trips, baseball, the talent show, and he especially loved his counselor.
“I’m not sure, Mark,” his mother, Gail, hesitated, “I just don’t know if we could do it this year.”
Life had changed in Mark’s home. His father was laid off 7 months ago and is struggling to start his own business. His mother was lucky to find work at a local daycare. Her income barely pays the mortgage and some basic necessities.
Mark no longer attends karate lessons. His parents can’t even afford to replace his lost baseball mitt.
“Can’t I do anything anymore?” he mumbles to himself.
What should she do? How could she turn him down this time? And what was he to do – stay at home all summer!
In desperation, Gail turned to a friend, Sylvia, who told her about Camp Gan Israel and its Scholarship Fund. “Gan Israel will come through for you,” said Sylvia. “They always do”.
Sylvia was right. Gail contacted Camp Gan Israel. We promised her that we would find a way to help her. We would seek a sponsor.
My friend, Camp Gan Israel has always opened its doors to parents like Gail and Robert. All children deserve a positive summer experience -- we turn no one away because they can’t afford camp.
But we can’t do this without you!
